Grief, Causes and Effects

We all know that physical hardships and serious physical accidents can cause profound grief that add to the physical pain. We may forget how much the reverse can be true: that profound grief can cause all kinds of physical illnesses. In both cases, we are reminded of the strong mind-body connection. Activities I have found can speak to both physical and emotional pain are yoga, meditation, and daily walks.

It’s not so much “mind over matter” as doing everything you can to calm the spirit and the brain, and strengthen the body. The ancient practice of acupuncture is also helpful for both. To the extent that we can bolster up our immune systems, we can help our bodies and minds mitigate against debilitating pain caused by grief and loss. The support of family and friends who may have had similar experiences can also be life-saving, of course.
